Taiwan is preparing for its annual Han Kuang military exercises, commence on July 22. This year’s drills will stand out with their increased intensity and realism, a clear reflection of the island’s response to China’s mounting aggression. The five-day exercises will feature nighttime operations and activities in Taipei, a unique element that underscores the significant escalation in Taiwan’s defensive preparations.

“Given the rapidly rising ‘enemy threat’ from China, our exercises this year will be as close as possible to the real thing,” an official from Taiwan’s defense ministry stated. “We want the soldiers to wonder whether this is real,” underscoring the emphasis on realistic training to ensure that the military is prepared for any eventuality.
China’s view of Taiwan as a breakaway province has led to an increasingly aggressive stance, with frequent military drills and maneuvers near the island. Beijing has not ruled out using force to bring Taiwan under its control, a position that has significantly heightened tensions in the region. This year’s Han Kuang exercises directly respond to these developments, reflecting the urgent need for Taiwan to remain vigilant and prepared.
